Managing Your Mood to Increase Productivity and Improve Relationships

Over the last few days I have noticed my mood has been low. I am not sure why – perhaps the change of the season. The nights are cooler now. I’ve certainly been more tired…

Do you experience these changes in mood too?

We all do. This is the cycle of Nature. Flowers bloom and die; the sun rises and sets. Our moods, too, change from one day to the next. Moods differ from emotional reactions in that they generally last longer and are less sudden.

You may not understand why this happens, but if you are not careful, your moodiness can have great impact on your ability to perform and produce. It’s distracting, can cause overwhelm and stress, and impede your ability to focus on your work.

Your moodiness impacts your relationships as it causes bad feelings and creates distance – even fear – within your relationships both at home and at work. This means you’ll need to do damage control later which also feels bad – it can be awkward – and requires humility along with the desire and willingness to make amends and smooth things over. (And the other person has to be willing to forgive.)

This also decreases productivity as people experience emotions in response to how they were treated or impacted by your behavior/mood, which means they may need to share their thoughts with others. And that impacts your reputation.

ripple in waterIt’s like a ripple in water; your mood and emotional state can set things in motion that can have far reaches which impact your success and your relationships.

The good news is that you have power to adjust your mood when the need arises. You can choose your mood, your attitude, how you manage your emotions, and how you behave.

But a choice is only a choice when you know you have one. Awareness is the key to success.

When you become aware, you can then choose a different response. If you’re not aware, you can’t. Self-awareness is a critical element for developing your emotional intelligence.

You can choose how you want to feel in any situation and at any time. You are not destined to have a “bad day”; at any moment you can choose to have a different experience.

Og Mandino tells us quite specifically in his bestselling book, The Greatest Salesman in the World, how to proceed:

And how will I master my emotions so that every day is a happy day, and a productive one? I will learn this secret of the ages: Weak is he who permits his thoughts to control his actions; strong is he who forces his actions to control his thoughts.

When you learn to master YOUR mood and your emotions, you also learn to understand that other people have not yet learned the secret to controlling their mind. Their mood will change and be different tomorrow. You will learn to not take their behavior personally and you can use empathy, because you know just what it’s like.

There is nothing more critical to success than learning to manage your mood and emotional state. Want to learn how? Contact me to schedule a coaching session. I teach people the keys to self-mastery. It is possible to change – you just need to learn some new tools for success. You can start with the free assessment for a peek inside your mind…
