stressWhat keeps you up at night?

What is the one worry or fear that you carry with you throughout your day?

How would your life be different without this worry or fear?

Many people have something that grips them – a fear, a worry or concern. And this fear is ever-present; it is your first thought when something challenges it. I ask you, “How would your life be different without this concern?” and many of you think, “It would be great!”

But have you ever considered specifically what would be different – how YOU would be different without this worry to occupy your mind?

Right now, this fear directs your behavior. It guides your decisions and actions. IT is in charge. This fear has become a habit of thought. It’s a comfort zone, no matter how uncomfortable it may be.

To move beyond it, you’ll need to let go of your attachment to it.

To take back your power, you first must name the fear and replace it with new thoughts that will guide your behave from this point onward. Each time is observe yourself thinking these fearful thoughts and feeling the fear wherever it shows itself physically in your body, choose new thoughts that empower you in a new direction.

Identify the fear that guides you -

  • Fear of making mistakes
  • Fear of not being liked
  • Fear of being controlled
    • or of losing control
  • Fear of failing
  • Fear of succeeding
  • Fear of losing someone or something
  • Fear of being alone or being abandonned

Consider this: What is the worst thing that could happen? And if it did, so what?

Envision your life without fear, worry or concern – free, at peace, calm, relaxed… Can you feel it? It’s a very different space. How are you different in the relaxed space?

What if…

  • You were in control of your finances…
  • You were more concerned about pleasing yourself instead of what others think of you…
  • You accepted responsibility for your emotional responses – rather than being at their mercy…
  • You were to accept your humanity and forgave yourself for past mistakes…
  • You were confident, felt more comfortable with yourself, and trusted yourself and your abilities…

You bring about what you think about the most. If you focus on your fear, then you get more of what you fear. If you focus on what you want, then you will receive more of that in your life.

Fear is about the future. It’s not about the NOW. Fear is about what could happen; not what IS happening. It is a fantasy – it’s not real. When you feel your fear, look around you. Pull yourself back into the present moment and what is going on right now. Focus your energy on what you can control – YOU.

The opposite of fear is faith.

Not religious faith – but rather the faith that whatever happens you will have the strength and the resources to manage it. TRUST that things work out the way they should – not necessarily the way you want – but that no matter what happens in life, you’ll get through it. And if you need support, hire a coach or other professional. You’re not alone, but you may need to reach out and ask for help.

freedomLet go of your fear. Give up your attachment to stress and your fear and welcome peace and freedom. It’s new so you’ll need time to adjust. But it’s worth the time and effort. Life is meant to be enjoyed and savored. Struggle is optional.

Dear Julie,
This piece on FEAR was so right on target for our workplace. I just had to share your insights and suggestions for coping with fear with our leadership group. Next step is to recognize fear in ourselves – we are all calling it something different: anxiety, depression, don’t want to come to work, can’t think straight . . . perhaps these are just symptoms, but they are preventing us from being fully who we need to be in this time of economic crunch. Thanks for sharing this great advice.

Interesting comment, Gilda. Yes, FEAR manifests itself in different ways but you are right, they are the symptoms of FEAR. Look for a future post on this topic! Thanks for your comments – Julie
